The Ilmenau University of Technology has
a long tradition of educating electrical
and mechanical engineers. Five depart-
ments offer a future-oriented education to
almost 7000 students in both bachelor
and master programmes. The University of
Technology has an excellent relationship
with local and regional business. A tech-
nology scout is engaged, specifically to fa-
cilitate collaboration within the region.
This person finds out what research top-
ics are of interest to companies, in partic-
ular smaller companies and gauges
whether the university can work on these
topics. The University of Technology
works closely with other institutions in
the area, in order to pool ideas on signif-
icant topics and unite expertise. This con-
firms that Thuringia is a prominent figure
when it comes to future technology. At the
Ilmenau University of Technology the pre-
dominant topics are automotive and en-
ergy technology. However, there are oth-
er areas where the university also receives
international acclaim. For example, the
water supply for Beijing was supported by
an Ilmenau research project. The Uni-
versity of Technology is also known for it's
teaching. Graduates go on to work across
the globe and contribute to the universi-
ty's excellent reputation. It is important
for the state that there is a focus on tech-
nology, engineering, media and the natu-
ral sciences. Based on the views of the u-
niversity president, professor Peter
Scharff, if you want to develop a cultural
region like Thuringia over the long-term,
there are two basic requirements. Firstly, a
stable economy is necessary to maintain
the sovereignty of the state. For this, the
region has to be profitable. Secondly, it's
cultural identity has to be preserved. This
means that cultural establishments can-
not be diluted until they are barely recog-
nisable. This would harm the identity of
the region and at the same time consider-
ably reduce it's attractiveness for people
looking to move to the area. This inher-
ently includes an attractive and efficient
academic landscape. To continue the cur-
rent economic revival, academia, business
and governance have to work together
and for all involved to pull in the same di-
rection.

Wie arbeiten Sie mit der Wirtschaft in der Region zusammen,
was funktioniert gut und wo gibt es Probleme?
„
Ich glaube, dass unsere Kontakte zur lokalen und regionalen
Wirtschaft sehr gut sind. Speziell was die Zusammenarbeit in der
Region anbetrifft, verfolgen wir eine Strategie mit einem Techno-
logie-Scout, einer Dame, die zu den Firmen fährt und dort nach-
fragt, was wir als Hochschule für sie tun können. Das betrifft
natürlich auch die Zusammenarbeit im wissenschaftlichen Bereich.
Wir versuchen herauszufinden, welche Forschungsthemen die
Unternehmen, und hierbei besonders auch die kleineren,
interessieren und wie wir diese als Hochschule bearbeiten können.
Das ist ein erfolgreiches Konzept, denn offenbar ist es für einige
Unternehmer eine Hürde, auf uns zuzukommen und die richtigen
Ansprechpartner zu finden.“
Im Bereich Automotive gibt es mit dem Innovationszentrum
Mobilität (ThIMo) gute Ansätze. Wird es weitere Initiativen
dieser Art geben?
„
Solche großen Zentren stehen immer vor dem Hintergrund von
Ressourcen. Das Land stellt dafür viel Geld zur Verfügung, um
dieses wichtige Zukunftsthema zu bündeln und vorhandene Kom-
petenzen zusammenzuführen. Damit meine ich nicht nur die
Kompetenzen der TU Ilmenau, sondern auch die anderer Institu-
tionen der Region. Dadurch können wir im Konzert der Großen
Die TU Ilmenau steht für eine lange Tradition in der Ausbildung von
Ingenieuren der Elektrotechnik und des Maschinenbaus. Fünf Fakul-
täten bieten derzeit fast 7.000 Studierenden eine zukunftsweisende
Ausbildung in Bachelor- und Masterstudiengängen an. Im Gespräch
