Arnstadt, dem GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf in Schmiedefeld, dem
Internationalen Sommerrodel- und dem Downhill-Cup in Ilmenau
werden im Ilm-Kreis seit Jahren hochkarätige Sportevents aus-
gerichtet und bieten so Spitzensport zum Anfassen.
Wandern und Radwandern
Durch seine verschiedenen Landschaftsformen vom Thüringer
Becken über das Vorland bis zu den Höhen des Thüringer Waldes
und die prägenden Flusstäler der Ilm und der Gera bietet der Kreis
vielfältige attraktive Wandermöglichkeiten an. Einer der
bekanntesten Wanderwege ist der Goethewanderweg von Ilmenau
über Manebach nach Stützerbach, der an das Wirken von Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe in der Region erinnert. Der beliebteste
Wanderweg Deutschlands, der Rennsteig, durchzieht den
Landkreis von der Stadt Oberhof kommend in Richtung
Masserberg. Das Radwanderwegenetz in der Region ist gut
ausgebaut. Für Radfreunde laden die Radwanderwege entlang der
Flusstäler der Ilm und Gera, die Bach-Erlebnisroute und der
Rennsteig-Radwanderweg zum Entdecken der Landschaft, Orte
und Sehenswürdigkeiten des Ilm-Kreis ein. Diese Radwanderwege
bilden als Radfernwege das Hauptnetz, zwischen denen weitere
Verbindungen auch mit anderen Fernradwanderwegen in
Thüringen geschaffen wurden.

hang gliding, tennis, skating, bowls or
nordic walking, our district has outdoor
activities for everyone.
The opportunities for recreational sport-
ing activities in Ilm district range from
modern sports halls and swimming
pools, to playing fields and multifunc-
tional sporting facilities, to bowling al-
leys, winter sport facilities, horse riding
facilities, as well as private air fields in
Alkersleben-Wülfershausen and Penne-
witz.
Due to it's favourable geographic posi-
tion, with altitudes from 700 to over 900
meters above sea level, towns in the
Rennsteig region, situated along the
Thuringian forest ridge, are ideally suit-
ed (weather permitting) for a variety of
winter sports. Cross country skiing trails,
prepared tracks, and training areas, illu-
minated toboggan runs, ski slopes and
ice skating rinks all make it hard to re-
sist a flying visit to the regions snowy
forests, mountainsides and valleys. By
virtue of it's varied and scenic land-
scape, from the Thuringian basin, to the
foothills and mountains of the
Thuringian forest, to the distinctive riv-
er valleys of the Ilm and Gera, the dis-
trict offers numerous picturesque hiking
opportunities.
The most popular hiking trail in
Germany, the Rennsteig, traverses the
district from Oberhof towards Masser-
berg. There is an extensive cycle path
network in the region. Enthusiasts are
well served with cycle routes along the
Ilm and Gera river valleys and the
Rennsteig. A perfect opportunity to ex-
plore the landscape, towns and attrac-
tions of Ilm district. These long distance
cycle routes are part of the main cycle
network and these routes are connected
to other long distance paths in
Thuringia.
